Remembering WWII 'Kissing Sailor'

George Mendosa, World War II veteran best known as the "kissing sailor", passed away Sunday (February 17) in his home state of Rhode Island, according to published reports. He was 95.

The iconic picture of Mr. Mendosa bending over and kissing a young dental assistant on VJ Day in 1945 was taken by photographer Alfred Eisenstadt during the celebration in Times Square for Life magazine.

The young dental assistant was later identified as Greta Zimmer Friedman.

Ms. Friedman died in 2016 at age 92.

Mr. Mendosa was laid to rest on Friday (February 22).
