Editor's Note: This blog post has been updated with new information to reflect recent changes with the bus and subway fare in New York City.
You just landed at Newark-Liberty International Airport and your connecting flight departs from LaGuardia. Well, there are four ways to get from EWR to LGA, or LGA to EWR if you read the instruction below in reverse.
Taxis from the Airport
Taking a taxi from Newark-Liberty is a good choice, however, the ride is not cheap. A one way cab fare from EWR to LGA will cost you anywhere between $90 and $100, plus tolls.
Bus from the Airport via Midtown, Manhattan
If you want to save $60 to $70 bucks on taking a taxi, then the bus is the second best option. From Newark-Liberty Airport, you can catch the Newark Airport Express, which is an airport express bus service that will take you to and from Manhattan. The one way fare is $15 and the bus stops at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on the West Side of Manhattan and Grand Central on the East Side.
From either the Port Authority Bus Terminal or Grand Central, you can catch the NYC Airporter, which is another airport express that serves LGA and JFK Airport.
The one way fare from Manhattan to LGA on the NYC Airporter express bus will cost you $13.
Commuter Rail, Subway and Bus or Commuter Rail and Taxi
If you really want to go cheap and you have plenty of time between transfer, then taking the train from EWR is convenient and fast.
Right outside the terminal, you can catch the Newark Airtrain monorail, which will take you to and from the Newark-Liberty International Airport train station, where a connection can be made to New Jersey Transit’s Northeast Corridor Line or North Jersey Coast Line, which will take you the rest of the way to New York’s Penn Station.
Once you arrive at New York Penn Station, follow the directional signs to the New York City Subway. Take the Queens-bound (northbound) “E” subway line, which is the Blue Line on the subway map, from 34th Street-Penn Station to Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights.
Upon arriving at Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights, exit the subway and transfer to the Q33 or Q45 bus to LaGuardia Airport. The Q33 bus services the Central Terminal Building, while the Q45 bus serves the Marine Air Terminal Building and the US Airways Terminal Building.
The one fare on NJ Transit from Newark-Liberty Airport to New York Penn Station, which includes an access fee to the Newark Airtrain monorail, will cost you $15. The fare on the subway from Penn Station to Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights is $2.50 with pay-per ride (regular) MetroCard, regardless of distance traveled.
It should be noted that there is a $1 surcharge when purchasing a MetroCard anywhere in the New York City Subway.
You can purchase the MetroCard at the subway station in Penn Station. The card will give you a free transfer to the Q33 or Q45 buses at Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights.
If you preferred not to take the subway, you can still take a taxi from the Penn Station to the airport. The one way fare is around $30, including tolls.
Enjoy your trip.
