Why the Statue of Liberty is green?

Ever wonder why the Statue of Liberty is green. Here's an answer from the National Parks Service, who in charge of the monument.

According to their website, the Statue's shell is made out of copper about 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) thick. Therefore overtime, the weather condition and the salty air from New York Harbor has turn the Statue's shell in the color we see today.

This is call rust and there is no way to turn it back to its original copper color.

In addition to its green color, here is something about Statue's crown and tablet.

The seven pointed spikes on the Statue's crown represent the seven seas and continents of the world and the tablet of law, held in the Statue's left hand, has the date of American Independence July 4, 1776, written on it in Roman numerals (July IV, MDCCLXXVI).
