New York City digging out from historic blizzard

New York City is starting the process to dig itself out of the second most historic blizzard on record.

A total of 26.8 inches (68 cm) of snow fell on the city between late Friday night and early Sunday morning. North-central New Jersey received higher amounts.

The Blizzard of 1888, aka the Great Blizzard of '88, still hold the record for the most snow fall at 58 inches (147 cm).

Public transportation in the New York City Metro Area was shut down during the blizzard, and the Governors of both New York and New Jersey (as well as the Mayor of New York City) issued a total travel ban. The ban was lifted at around 7 AM Sunday.

Now, with fridge temperatures during night-time hours scheduled for the week, the snow on the ground will stick around for long while.
