Fame Central Park castle close for renovation



Sad news for visitors to Central Park's Belvedere Castle.

The fame castle closed on February 26 for a years long, $6 million restoration project, according the Central Park Conservancy.

Officials at the nonprofit organization, which manages the park under contract with the City of New York and the New York City Parks Department, states the project will address drainage and masonry issues; as well as waterproofing and modernize the castle's climate control systems by installing a geothermal heating system.

Construction plan also call for replacing windows, doors, lighting fixtures and providing a more accessible route to the castle for visitors with mobility impairment.

Originally built as a lookout spot in 1869, Belvedere Castle was last renovated in 1983. The castle also serves as the city's official weather station for the National Weather Service.
