Editor's Note: This blog post has been updated to reflect recent changes to the subway and bus fare in New York City, which was enacted on March 3, 2013.
If you're a big fan of the New York Yankees, like I am, and you need to know how to get to a from the Stadium, here's how to do it by public transit, which is the best way to go. Because driving to the Stadium is highly not recommended.
From the West Side of Manhattan
If you're coming from Penn Station, Times Square, Chelsea, or Lower Manhattan, you can take the uptown (northbound) "A" or "C" trains (Blue Line on the New York City Subway map) to 145th Street, where a transfer can be made downstairs to the Bronx-bound (northbound) "B" or "D" trains (Orange Line) toYankee Stadium.
Please Note: During the evening rush hour, Monday-Friday from 4-7pm, Bronx-bound "D" trains operate a "skip-stop" service by-passing Yankee Stadium in the northbound direction only. If you're traveling to the Stadium during the evening rush hour, please transfer at 145th Street to the "B" train, which will stop at all stations in the Bronx, including Yankee Stadium.
From the East Side of Manhattan
If you're on the East Side of Manhattan, getting to Yankee Stadium is easy. You can take the Bronx-bound (northbound) 4 train (Green Line on the subway map) to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium. You can't miss the Stadium as the train emerges from the subway just north of the 149th Street-Grand Concourse station.
Another way to get to Yankee Stadium from the East Side will be by commuter rail. If you're near Grand Central Terminal, you can take Metro-North's Hudson Line from Grand Central to Yankee-East 153rd Street. The stadium is a short walk from the Metro-North train station, just follow the crow going to the Stadium.
You can also take a shuttle train from Grand Central to Yankee Stadium. The shuttle departs Grand Central every 15 minutes and make one intermediate stop in Harlem (Harlem-125th Street) before terminating at Yankee-East 153rd Street.
From Times Square
If you're in Times Square, you can take the Queens-bound (westbound) 7 train (Purple Line) or the 42nd Street Shuttle (Black Line) to Grand Central Terminal, where a transfer can be made to the Bronx-bound (northbound) 4 train (Green Line), or Metro-North's Hudson Line or Yankee Shuttle.
The fare on the subway is $2.50 one way ($5 round tip) with a pay per ride (regular) MetroCard. If you're in town for a week and your trip involves Yankee Stadium, you can purchase a weekly unlimited ride MetroCard for $30.
It should be noted that that there is a $1 surcharge when purchasing a new MetroCard in the New York City Subway.
If you're taking Metro-North from Grand Central to the Stadium, it should be noted that the MetroCard is not accepted on Metro-North trains, therefore, you will need to purchase a rail ticket at Grand Central prior to boarding. A round trip off peak ticket will cost you $12.50. while children ages 5 to 11 travel for only $6.50 round trip off peak. Children under 5 years of age travel for free.
If you're traveling on the weekend, you can purchase a CitiTicket, which is a discounted weekend rail ticket, from any Metro-North ticket machine at Grand Central for $4 one-way ($8 round-trip).
Beware of illegal ticket sellers
If. for any reason, you're offered tickets at a reduced rate than that of the Stadium, don't buy them because then could be counterfeits.
In addition, under New York State Law, the resell of tickets within 500 feet (150 meters) of the Stadium is illegal. This means, the reseller could risk arrest, if caught and you could loose you money.
Always purchase your Yankee home game tickets from Stadium ticket windows, through Ticketmaster or from the Yankees' official website.
Enjoy the game.
