Whether this your first trip to the US Open or not, the best way to get to the tennis tournament is by public transit.
If you're taking the subway, the number 7 subway line (purple line on the subway map) is the cheapest and most frequent way to go. You can take the Flushing Line train from either Times Square or Grand Central to Mets-Willest Point.
The trip on the Number 7 takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on whether you're taking the express or the local train, and the fare is $2.50 one way ($5 round tip) with a pay per ride (regular) MetroCard, or $2.75 one way with a SingleRide ticket.
If you're in town for a week and your trip involves the US Open, you can purchase a weekly unlimited ride MetroCard for $30.
It should be noted that there is a $1 surcharge when purchasing a new MetroCard in the New York City Subway.
Another way to get to the Open is by the Long Island Railroad, which is a commuter railroad, from Penn Station. The trip from Penn Station to Mets-Willest Point on the Port Washington Branch take about 15 minutes each way and the one way off peak fare will cost you $5.75 ($11.50 off peak round trip).
If you're taking the LIRR on the weekends, you can purchase a CitiTicket, which is a discounted weekend rail ticket, from any LIRR ticket machine at Penn Station for $4 one-way ($8 round-trip).
Upon arriving at Mets-Willest Point, on either the subway or the LIRR, follow the directional signs to the USTA National Tennis Center, which is located a short walk from the station.
Beware of illegal ticket re-sellers
If, for any reason, are offered ticket to tennis matches outside the National Tennis Center that are less than those at the ticket window, don't purchase them because they could be fakes.
